Pembroke New Primary School - St. Clare's College
This new primary school welcomed its first students in September 2009.
It is the first school which is capable to generate its own electricity. This is due to the fact that it is equipped with photovoltaic panels, solar water heaters and tubular day lighting units. This school has also an intelligent lighting system. It is designed to provide lighting according to the ambient needs by calculating the level of natural light and thus increases or decreases the neon light by means of sensors and controlled by a specialized software.
Furthermore, a vertical axis wind turbine was installed and it is designed to generate 2.5 KWp of clean renewable electricity. The main advantage of this type of wind is that it has noise and vibration free features.
This school has a dedicated reservoir to collect rainwater from the roofs. This second class water is used for flushing water cisterns and cleaning purposes. Rainwater for irrigation is collected in a separate reservoir from the internal yard and the school playgrounds.
This school is built on two storeys and it is fully accessible for students with special needs. Moreover, the internal yard is covered with rubber safety flooring to ensure that students have a safe environment.
